Chevrolet Cruze
Come September, Chevrolet’s smart new Cruze will be in showrooms and what’s more it comes with strong credentials. It is the first GM product to be based on the company’s all-new, global, Delta platform, which will also underpin the next-gen Opel Astra. It’s been extensively tested all over the world but especially in Europe, the Cruze’s key market. AutoCar (April ’09) gives us a preview…

The exterior is chiseled and sophisticated to say the least. The unusual double-decker front grille treatment is particularly refreshing but the whole of the car – from the headlamps to the detailing of the exterior rubber seals around the windows – is of tasteful good quality.

The pleasant surprises continue inside. The ‘dual cockpit’ treatment is original and stylish and the quality of materials and finishes are very impressive. It even gets chunks of switchgear from the rather more expensive Opel Insignia (Steering wheel, stalks, headlamps switch) as well as its own impressive audio and climate control layout. Sensible practicalities (huge glovebox, big door bins and excellent centre console storage) sit alongside Audi-like air vents, a nicely shaped steering wheel rim and impressive audio system.

When it’s launched in India, the Cruze will come with a choice of a 138bhp 1.8-litre petrol and a 147bhp 2.0-litre diesel engine. There will be the option of an automatic transmission as well.

The Cruze is pretty smooth sailing even on poor roads and has a very refined cabin at motorway speeds (particularly the diesel version). The chassis’s emphasis is on comfort and the Cruze is at its best when the driver is just rowing it along. Attempt at brisk progress can be rewarded on the right road with a decent level of flowing competence. Drive harder, though, and the steering becomes rather detached on a hard lock and the inherent understeer is very gently discouraging.

The Cruze is an impressive machine in many ways and could become a very serious mainstream contender that significantly undercuts the established opposition wraps up AutoCar (April ’09).
