The
August 2006 issue of Top Gear has featured an article on the new Mercedes-Benz
S-Class. And it’s obvious that they are smitten. Why not,
though? With all the class, technology and features that are stuffed
into this package, it would be abnormal not to fall in love with this
baby. And what’s featured below just explains what’s so
special about this new Merc.
PROS:
1. Top
Gear doesn’t know where to begin talking about this Mercedes-Benz
S-Class. They begin by saying that the engine is the quietest thing
you’ve ever heard. Quite a paradox, we know.
2. This new version is somehow more posh, taller and wider (how can
something be classier than any Mercedes?) than the previous S350, but
seems shorter in length.
3. The interiors of the car are beautifully elegant, and as spacious
as ever. The dials and buttons are ergonomically sound. The rest of
the interiors are amazing to look at, with matte-finish wooden look,
flexible top-class leather, elite use of plastics and chrome. Perfectly
cozy, yet very roomy. There is a lot of technology about the interiors
too, but nothing that is vague and too hi-tech to comprehend. Truly,
world-class mechanics at its best!
4. The rear seats of any Mercedes Benz deserve a special mention. And
it would be a crime not to do so here. As always, the rear passenger
seats are by far the best feature of the new S-Class. These are multi-purpose
in the true sense of the term; you can stretch out on them, play cards,
jump about, do whatever, and they happily comply. They offer just enough
back support, can be adjusted to just the right temperature, and all
the fancy things you’ve ever wanted from a rear seat.
5. The way the passengers are pampered in this car is marvelous. The
attention to detail can easily be one of the USPs of this car. For instance,
check out the tiny niches for your fingers at the back of the door armrests,
the cabin lighting can be adjusted to suit your fancy, and the hidden
LEDs that create homely glows under wood panels in the doors and dashboard.
Brilliancy, thy name is S-Class!
6. If you have the money, your wait must end here. This is just THE
car. We needn’t say more.
CONS :
1. All
good things come with a catch. And sadly, The S-Class is not an exception.
Like its imported counterparts, this one does not come with a bag of
goodies like the chest of equipment that include the night-vision infra-red
and reversing camera.
2. The steering is a tad unpredictable, and is a little too light at
low speeds. It can also a be slightly unresponsive at other times. Not
a great problem here, though.
3. The rear of the car is heavy-set and aesthetically not in keeping
with the rest of the car. It could have certainly been better.
