Nestled in a
deep valley on the crest of the never-ending Nilgiri hills, at a height
of 7500 feet, lies the picturesque hillstation of Ootacamund. The land of
the blue mountains, as the Nilgiris are known, has abundant vegetation,
gurgling streams and tea gardens. All this makes Ooty a truly breathtaking,
awe-inspiring destination that’s synonymous with vacations and holidays.
A few decades ago, scores of Hindi movies were shot here and many a tree
has been witness to the ubiquitous Bollywood love duet.
However, over the years, Ooty — like so many Indian holiday spots
— has buckled under the advance of commerce and the town centre is
absolute mayhem during the peak of the holiday season. Fortunately, there
are places around Ooty which are truly scenic and make the perfect setting
for a weekend break or a longer holiday.
Club Mahindra’s
Danish Villa is one such getaway that makes an ideal holiday for you and
your dear ones. Located away from the hustle-bustle of town, this quaint
property lets you enjoy the beauty of Ooty even during
the height of the tourist season. The drive up here is also brilliant, especially
up the Sirur ghat via Masinagudi. The 36 hairpin bends add just the right
amount of excitement after the straight and relaxing drive from Bangalore
to Mudumalai via Mysore and Bandipur.
During the days of the Raj, the Britishers keen to get away from the searing
heat of the plains headed for Ooty. As a result of this, Ooty retains a
peppering of old churches, sprawling Victorian bungalows, and roads with
quaint English names. Club Mahindra’s Danish Villa is an architectural
model of Victorian splendour, old world charm and contemporary amenities.
If you’ve wanted to live like a lord, charm your lady and give in
to a plethora of
indulgences, you’ve found the perfect spot. This resort abounds with
legends, fables and anecdotes of a time long gone. Bring back the past,
come to your kingdom.
Driving up the driveway, the visitor is greeted by the cosy and inviting
façade of the villa.
The resort has a mix of studio and single-bedroom apartments; being interconnected,
they can be converted into bigger apartments and can accommodate upto six
adults with complete privacy for one to three couples.
The exotic names of the rooms — Skagen, Tisvilde, Fano, Hornbaek —
reflect the Danish origin of the villa that will transport you to another
era of antiquated elegance. A refreshing change from routine hill resorts,
the spacious accommodation gives you the freedom to lounge around in comfort.
Mealtimes can be an elaborate affair in the spacious dining hall. As with
all the other Club Mahindra properties, the room amenities include a TV,
VCD-cum-music player, cable TV, hotpot to boil water for tea and coffee,
microwave and appropriate crockery, mini-fridge, room heater and laptop
connectivity. The dining room is tastefully done up and there are non-alcoholic
wines from Australia
to be sampled as well as the famous home-made chocolates from Ooty.

BANGALORE
TO CLUB MAHINDRA’S DANISH VILLA, SHEDDON OOTY: 270KM
This
straightforward drive can be comfortably done in just over six hours.
As always, leave early in the morning to avoid traffic in between Bangalore
and Mandya. Road-widening work was in progress in mid-July and we were
told that it would be completed by November 2004. Once this is done, the
already good drive will become even better.
Once you enter the Bandipur wildlife sanctuary, cut down your speed as
you
might be treated to some wildlife sightings. Remember not to step out
of your car anywhere except at the reception centre at Bandipur or Mudumalai.
On our previous trips, we’ve seen wild bison and elephants on this
road. Exercise utmost caution: if angered or irritated, they can kill
you without much guilt or inconvenience.
BANGALORE
TO MANDYA — 100KM
Set off
early, around 6.00am and you’ll get a clear run all the way past
Ramanagaram and Channapatna to the 24-hour Café Coffee Day just
before Maddur. This is 68km away if you’ve zeroed your trip at the
start of M G Road.
Even if you haven’t, there are huge signboards 17 and 10km before
the café. Since the café is on the opposite side of a road
where cars will be doing three-digit speeds, do take care while turning
into it. You might get a little traffic congestion within Maddur and Mandya,
but this clears up once you’ve passed the towns.
.
MANDYA
TO MYSORE — 40KM
The
road considerably narrows once you get closer to Mysore. Drive cautiously
as there are a number of cyclists and pedestrians around. There is a BPCL
petrol pump just as you enter Mysore and you can top up here.
Head straight through Mysore till the palace roundabout. Turn left here
and take the first right after that. A kilometre ahead is a one-way road
that forks left — this is the road to Nanjangud and Bandipur.
